What it is
Rejoyn is the first and only prescription app for the treatment of major depressive disorder symptoms. Major depressive disorder is also known as depression. It's for adults age 22+ who want to add to their current antidepressant medication. Rejoyn consists of proven brain-training exercises and short skills-based therapy lessons that tap into the brain’s natural ability to change (known as neuroplasticity).
Rejoyn is for adults age 22+ with major depressive disorder, also known as depression, who are currently being treated with an antidepressant medication by a licensed healthcare provider. To see if Rejoyn is right for you, talk to your current healthcare provider or you can start a virtual consult. Learn more about getting a prescription.
The science behind Rejoyn
Research reveals that depression can be caused by a disruption in communication between the feeling and thinking parts of the brain. The exercises in Rejoyn are designed to help strengthen the connection between them, so they're able to communicate better. This may help the brain process emotions, improving depression symptoms. Learn more about the science behind Rejoyn.
Depression can be caused by a disruption between the feeling and thinking parts of the brain. The brain-training exercises in Rejoyn are designed to activate these parts of the brain at the same time. This helps to strengthen their connection so they can communicate better. This may help the brain better process emotions, improving depression symptoms. In addition, the short skills-based therapy lessons teach you skills that can help manage depression symptoms, including handling strong emotions, reframing negative thinking, and taking positive actions.
How the app works
The brain-training exercises in Rejoyn are a core part of the treatment. The exercises involve identifying and remembering emotions on a series of faces. To help you keep making progress, the level of difficulty will adjust as you move through the exercises. Brain-training exercises take about 20 to 30 minutes to complete and are done 3 times a week. Explore brain-training exercises.
The short skills-based therapy lessons in Rejoyn teach you skills that may help you manage your depression symptoms. Lessons are done 3 times a week and typically take about 5 minutes to complete. After watching each video, you’ll practice a mindfulness skill or do additional activities to reinforce the lesson. Learn more about short skills-based therapy lessons.
There are 6 tasks per week and you can only do up to 2 tasks a day. Plan to use Rejoyn less than 2 hours per week for 6 weeks. Learn more about the treatment schedule.
Rejoyn is not intended to be used as a standalone treatment. Rejoyn does not replace your current medication, including medication for treatment of major depressive disorder. You should continue your current treatment as directed by your healthcare provider.
Rejoyn cannot send alerts or warnings to your healthcare provider. If you feel that your depression symptoms are worsening or if you have feelings or thoughts of harming yourself or others, please contact your healthcare provider, dial 911, or go to the nearest emergency room immediately. Learn more about the brain-training exercises and short skills-based therapy lessons in Rejoyn, and what the 6-week schedule looks like.
Results
Rejoyn was effective in a clinical trial of adults age 22+ with major depressive disorder, also known as depression, who were also taking an antidepressant medication. After they finished the 6-week program, the effect of Rejoyn was measured. Results showed that using Rejoyn reduced depression symptoms. On average, people reported that Rejoyn reduced their depression severity from moderately severe to mild,* and clinicians reported that Rejoyn reduced depression severity from moderately ill to mildly ill.† During the month following treatment with Rejoyn, there was a trend toward continued improvement. Learn more about results with Rejoyn.
*Measured by a participant-reported outcome scale of depression, Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). In the control arm, people using a Sham app reported reduced depression severity from moderately severe to moderate.
†Measured by a clinician-reported outcome scale of depression, Clinical Global Impressions-Severity Scale (CGI-S).
Rejoyn is a smartphone app, so it doesn't have medication-like side effects. In a clinical trial, adding Rejoyn to an antidepressant medication reduced depression symptoms without side effects related to Rejoyn. While taking Rejoyn, if you feel that your depression symptoms are worsening or if you have feelings or thoughts of harming yourself or others, please contact your healthcare provider, dial 911, or go to the nearest emergency room immediately. You cannot change your schedule or scheduled tasks in Rejoyn. If you miss a task, your schedule will automatically update so you can still complete everything for the week. This means you may have to do 2 tasks in 1 day in order to stay on track. You cannot do more than 2 tasks per day. Lessons that you've missed will be available for you the next week in the Toolkit, but the previous week’s Brain Exercises will not be available.
Rejoyn is designed to be used consistently for 6 weeks.
It’s understandable to miss a task once in a while, but if you stop using Rejoyn for an extended period, it will not be possible to restart or pick back up where you left off.
If you're worried about sticking with the schedule, it might help to know that in a clinical trial of adults with major depressive disorder who were taking an antidepressant medication, nearly 9 out of 10 completed at least two-thirds of their sessions.
If you are unable to complete the program, you can speak to your healthcare provider to see if another prescription is right for you.
After you complete your 6-week treatment with Rejoyn, there is a 4-week lesson-review period when you'll have access to the short, skills-based therapy lessons only. However, the brain-training exercises will no longer be available. After the 10 weeks (6-week treatment period plus 4-week lesson-review period) end, you will no longer be able to access Rejoyn.
